Daimler partners with Penske and NFI for trials of its electric trucks
In an earlier-this-week announcement, Daimler Trucks North America LLC said that it is expanding the test program for its electric-trucks, by partnering with vehicle rental company Penske Truck Leasing and third-party logistics provider NFI Industries. Daimler plans to launch full-scale production of electric trucks in 2021.
According to the announcement made by Portland, Oregon-based Daimler, preliminary deliveries of the company’s eCascadia heavy-duty electric trucks and eM2 106 medium-duty trucks to Penske and NFI will start in late 2018.
Daimler further revealed that it will deliver 10 units of eCascadia and 10 units of eM2 to Reading, Pa.-based Penske, which will use the trucks in California and the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, Cherry Hill, N.J.-based NFI will be delivered 10 units of eCascadia trucks, which will be used for drayage activities from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to warehouses in Inland Empire, California.
Daimler will itself carry out the trials of its eCascadia and eM2 electric trucks by operating them within its Product Validation Engineering (PVE) test fleet in Oregon.
With regard to its partnership with Penske and NFI for the electric-truck trials, Daimler said that both the companies will become members of the Germany-based company’s Electric Vehicle Council, for the use of the ‘Freightliner Electric Innovation Fleet,’ and will share the knowledge gained through the trials of the electric trucks in the real world.
