Ford to focus on EVs and trucks, phasing out its passenger cars
In an announcement made during Ford’s latest financial report this week, CEO Jim Hackett said that passenger cars are being phased out by the automaker, with its focus having shifting chiefly to electric vehicles (EVs) and trucks. The move towards electric vehicles from Ford can be considered as the biggest boost for electric vehicles segment. In the recent weeks, many automobile companies have recognized EV segment as the future and Ford’s decision to phase out conventional cars will give further push to electric vehicles market.
With the announcement implicitly hinting that passenger cars being aggressively phased out by Ford, Hackett said that the automaker has efforts underway towards “building a winning portfolio.” He further added that Ford is presently “focusing on products and markets where Ford can win.”
The announcement made by Hackett implies that all sedans are apparently being phased out by Ford in North America. The company has not detailed its plans or any timeline for implementing changes in its product portfolio yet.
Hackett specifically said in the announcement that Ford has no plans for investment in the next-generation models of its traditional sedans for North America; and added that trucks, utilities and commercial vehicles will comprise nearly 90 percent of the automaker’s North America portfolio by the year 2020.
According to the information shared by Hackett, the car portfolio of Ford in North America in the next few years will transition to two vehicles --- “the best-selling Mustang and the all-new Focus Active crossover coming out next year.” Hackett also said that new “white space” vehicle silhouettes – which amalgamate the finest features of cars and utilities -- are also being explored by Ford.
