Indian startup focuses on Graphene Nanotechnology to solve EV ‘range anxiety’

With major automakers like Audi, Mercedes and Hyundai planning to electrify their vehicles for the Indian market in 2019, Bengaluru-based start-up Log 9 Materials is focusing on innovative Graphene Nanotechnology to solve the ‘range anxiety’ of electric vehicles (EVs).

Log 9 Materials is an IIT-Roorkee spin-off which is working hard towards EV improvisation, with persistent efforts underway in the nanotechnology domain. The startup -- founded by a few IIT graduates -- is looking to resolve the ‘range anxiety’ issue associated with battery-run vehicles, so that the range of the vehicles can be increased.

About the focus of Log 9 Materials on Graphene Nanotechnology for potentially improving EV range, the startup’s founder Akshay Singhal said that the key objective of the company is develop inventive end-user commercial applications of the incredible substance called ‘graphene.’

Elaborating on Log 9 Materials’ innovative technology, Singhal said that the startup intends promoting ‘metal-air battery’ technology for transforming the production of clean energy. Metal-air battery -- powered by metal, air and water -- is a primary energy-generation technology, just like a fuel cell. It involves the use of graphene for manufacturing cost-effective and commercially viable batteries.

Highlighting the fact that Log 9 Materials presently holds three patents in graphene synthesis and graphene products, Singhal said: “We are trying to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial products, which are not coming out in the market.”
