Mercedes plans 2020 launch for its S-Class of luxury electric vehicles
During the course of a recent interview with Autocar magazine, Mercedes-Benz large-cars project chief Michael Kelz said that the automaker is planning a 2020 launch for its S-Class of electric vehicles (EVs).
Kelz said that the S-Class electric sedan planned for 2020 launch will be Mercedes’ zero-emissions EV which will definitely be “at the level of the S-Class,” but will have a different moniker.
Although the S-Class electric sedan’s moniker has not been officially disclosed by Mercedes, it is pertinent to note that the automaker had applied for an ‘EQ S’ trademark some time back. As such, it can be assumed that the S-Class electric sedan will be another vehicle in Mercedes’ new EQ electric-vehicle range, together with the EQ A hatchback and EQ C SUV which have already been introduced in concept form.
Kelz revealed during the interview that the S-Class electric sedan will be Mercedes’ range-topping EV --- a “luxury, electric car, a top-of-the-line car.” Kelz also said that the front and rear overhang of the S-Class electric sedan will be comparatively shorter than those of the conventionally powered S-Class, because of the adoption of electric powertrains.
The concept of the S-Class electric sedan has already been developed by Mercedes; and the latest disclosure by Kelz implies that the concept will make a transition to a production model by 2020. The Mercedes S-Class electric sedan will compete with the forthcoming zero-emissions Jaguar XJ and the next-generation electric Audi A8.
