Waymo to purchase 62,000 more Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans
In a recent announcement made via The Verge, Alphabet’s Waymo division has revealed that it is expanding its self-driving fleet with the addition of 62,000 more units of the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan.
According to the announcement, Waymo has inked a new deal with Fiat Chrysler (FCA) for the purchase 62,000 electric minivans. The new deal comes in addition to Waymo’s earlier purchase of “thousands” of electric minivans from Chrysler in January 2018, to expand its self-driving fleet. The delivery of those vehicles will commence by the end of 2018.
Waymo’s new deal with Chrysler comes ahead of its first ride service this year. Besides the latest deal with Chysler, Waymo is also in talks to allow other automakers to sell vehicles which are equipped with the company’s autonomous technology.
Waymo is an early-stage competitor of Uber and Lyft ride-hailing services. It started operating an Early Rider program in Chandler, Arizona, a few months back, and plans to make the program publicly available later in 2018.
The ongoing efforts by Waymo to expand its self-driving fleet mark a significant move by the company as it brings its service to other cities. In addition, Waymo’s expanded fleet will also be useful with testing where the company has driven self-driving vehicles around the US in all types of weather conditions.
